Towball requirements
The Thule towball mount on the 933 features a precision towball coupling mechanism (the Hercules coupler) which is designed for use only with 50mm towballs meeting the ISO1103 standard (the so called ISO 50mm standard). More specific information on towball requirements and mounting, can be found here.
We are often asked about the difference between the 933 XT and the 931/932. They’re both the same price.
1 – Thule 931/932
This one is more popular as it doesn’t need a particular towball, it fits onto almost any towball, both 47mm and 50mm (there are some exotic towballs that don’t fit well but most fit).
2 – Thule 933 (this one)
Less popular as it needs the European ISO towball. Product info has links to more detail on that. however, if you get your ducks in a row, this is the better rack in the end in the small details:
1 – the towball you are using is a perfect fit to the rack
2 – the lever that clamps onto the towball is perpendicular to your car, making it easier to use
3 – if you choose to get a loading ramp (sold separately), the 933 loading ramp is a folding one which has a little home inside the rack to live in, and is wider to better suit MTB style tyres. So it works better and you don’t have to store it in the boot. The 932’s loading ramp doesnt fold up, is a bit narrow for many bike tyres and you have to store a long ramp in the boot somewhere.
