In the July school holidays my in-laws took the whānau do Tūrangi for 4 nights. Their rental car had room for 5 out of 6 of us. And I had to be back at EBT for the Saturday shift. And the bus to Tūrangi is a double decker service that doesn’t take bikes, even when disassembled. Perfect conditions to go on an e-bike touring ride with a side serve of actual transport purpose. I chose the bus to Rotorua (Gisborne service, accepts bikes) and rode to Tūrangi via back roads. The way home would be on the ‘no bike’ double decker, so the plan was to make the bike very small and put in a bag. The back up plan if that failed was to leave the bike (in its bag) in Tūrangi to be picked up by a courier the next day and brought back to Auckland. The whānau rental car was packed with people and stuff and wouldnt’ even fit a wheel, let alone a bike. The bus accepted it without a second look. Here’s the video of the disassembly – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-nYCQSeGSA.
