Northride launch event info at EBT

Northride at EBT - Thursday June 25th from 6pm

You've probably heard talk about about a government scheme that helps you save thousands off an e-bike. But how do you actually use it?

We've invited one of the providers (Northride) to a special evening event at EBT to answer those questions and get you and your company set up!

Join us for a relaxed evening to learn about how your company can faciliate its employees to purchase electric bicycles from their pre-tax income, saving thousands of dollars at no cost to the workplace!

We will have experts from Northride (and EBT!) on hand to answer any questions you may have about setting up, from payroll to taxation to financing.

Everyone is welcome, whether you are an employee wanting to learn more to pitch this opportunity to your workplace or a decision maker in the company or perhaps representing related industries such as payroll providers or end of trip cycling facilities.

RSVP for catering purposes here.

Background about salary sacrifice e-bike purchases in NZ

The provision of e-bikes by an employer to an employee has been exempt from Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) since early 2023. The e-bike in question has to be provided for the purpose of travelling to work. Non-electric bikes, scooters and public transport also gained exempt from FBT at the same time.

This means it is possible for an employee to fund an e-bike from their pre-tax income, costing them significantly less out of their pocket compared to purchasing one the normal way, with their already-taxed income. The legislation pertains to the provision of the bike. Accessories like hemets, are not included, while items integral to the provision of the bike such as upgrades that have become part of the bike, can be.

Background information about Northride

In 2026, a new offering to faciliate salary-sacrified e-bike purchasing arrived in New Zealand. Finnish company Vapaus (translating to Freedom), which has been in this exact industry for many years in Scandinavia, launched under the name Northride specifically to serve the NZ market.

Northride offers the most fully developed and 'grown-up' service of e-bike salary sacrifice with a package that includes financing of the e-bike, covers insurance, a greater range of accessories and add-ons and optionally covers ongoing maintenance of the bike. The employee Northride app is highly functional after tens of thousands of transactions' experience in Europe.

Set to a default of 2 years, the lease period is longer than other offerings, resulting in a lower monthly cost to the rider (employee). Crucially, because the bike is financed from the start, Northride takes an active role in organising the bike and the lease in the event that the employee leaves the company during the lease.

The many aforementioned benefits such as financing and insurance come with their costs which means the employee (rider) does not 'save' as much on the total cost of the bike over the 2 years compared to a non-insured, non-financed scenario.

How Northride works

Your workplace needs to be registered

For an employee to get themselves a bike using Northride, the workplace needs to be registered.
